I agree that your English is pretty good already. Even with no corrections it is easy to understand you. I have made some "improvements" in red. I'm sorry if they are very bright. I don't mean to say these are serious errors. I just want them to be easy to see.

Regarding the word "student", it is ok to call yourself a student even now. We use the word "student" for people who go to school at any level. So, Congratulations!!! You are already a student.

I'm an older guy, but I am studying Vietnamese, so I get to call myself a student too.

Watching sport is becoming a habit, even a routine day of many people. However, people today spend so much time doing this instead of working. This essay will analyze several factors influence this change and look at some of the effects.
One of the key factors is the requirement of entertainment. The pressure of work makes people tired, which evidently leads to the relaxing, so watching sports is one of the most suitable choices. It is the fact that more and more stadiums , sport centres are built to supply all demand of relaxing, and the proportion of people, who watch sport in frequency, is increasing steadily.
Another contributing factor is the attraction of sports. There is a large number of sports such as football, volleyball, basketball or swimming, dance sport, etc, and each of them has a distinctive style, which can satisfy all viewers. As watching the favourite sports, emotion like happiness, sadness or surprise can be expressed leisurely, which makes people pleasant. As the result that sports attracts more and more viewers.
The development of broadcast is another cause of spending much time watching sports. Every sport event in the world now can be seen pratically at once with live programmes. The number of sport channels such as ESPN, Star Sports, which provide sport information over a day, increases considerably. This makes sports more popular, also makes people spend more time watching it.
However, watching sports too much has several effects. The biggest effect is on the health. Staying up late too much to watch television leads to the lack of sleeping, eventually leads to some adverse diseases. Another effect is on the

Hi, autriv! Sorry for being nosy here but your questions are really interesting.

I've delved in some dictionaries but none of which give me a proper info for your inquiry about those synonyms. So, I have to use my own words:

Extent: usually (not always) used to describe ranges or magnitudes of physical objects. The range, in this case, focuses on an origin or an area of concentration and extends from it.
_ It is difficult to assess the full extent of the damage.
_ She was exaggerating the true extent of the problem.
_ You can’t see the full extent of the beach from here.

Scope: This word, on the other hand, states the limits of more intangible objects. And such limits are defined by some rules and can not be changed.
_ First try to do something that is within your scope.
_ This subject lies beyond the scope of our investigation.
_ These issues were outside the scope of the article.

Scale: I think this word can be applied to any type of objects regardless to their physical statuses. Unlike scope, it does not limit anything from exceeding the range (just tells how large something is). It's not restrictive.
_ It was impossible to comprehend the full scale of the disaster.
_ On a global scale, 77% of energy is created from fossil fuels.

(Those examples are taken from Oxford Advanced learner's dictionary 7th edition)

"Offspring" is a formal word. 99 out of 100 English words are neither formal nor informal AND most typical informal words are slang or regional ones. Just avoid using slangs and not well-known expressions in your essays. Don't put too much concern into formal and informal because many informal words are accepted in formal essays.

A word's formality has nothing to do with the complexity of that word. Recall that terminologies are the most complex words and they are not formal ones.

Now that exams are finished, do VN students get some vacation time? American students get a lot of time off...1 or 2 weeks at Christmas/New Year, a week in the Spring, and 2 or 3 months in the Summer. What's the story in VN? And if you get the time, how do you spend it.

(Assume that students here are ones attending colleges because they are less nerdy than ones at high schools - No offense. Most Vietnamese are like learning machine when they are at high schools)

Tết - 2 to 4 weeks (depends on individual school). Most students will use this chance to visit their parents in their hometowns, see old friends at high school and relatives living near them. Some will go on vacation with family and/or friends.

Summer holiday - 1 to 2 months. Quite the same with Tết. Since they have months in hand, the number of students go on vacation is higher and many will look for part-time jobs or internships.

OK here's my story. My plan for the upcoming holiday, Tết, is to take a trip to Saigon with my family. Spend a week there then take a tour to Singapore or Malaysia with relatives in Saigon for another week. :D And that will be the first time I travel to the South for Tết.

PS: is there snow in Chicago this Christmas?

I understand your desire to have snow in VN, but as we say, "Don't hold your breath." This means if you stop breathing until it snows in VN, you'll be dead before it happens. Has it ever snowed anywhere in VN in its entire history? If you like white, you will need to settle for coconut, I think. With global warming, we don't even get snow in Chicago very often.

1) "my family", even though it contains several people, is a singular noun, so the verb should be "visits". I would be interested if there is disagreement on this point because I just saw the British queen on tv use this differently. But as I have said before, Americans don't expect the English to speak English correctly.

2) "Every year" and "often" in the same English sentence are in conflict. "Often" means "many times" or "usually", but not "always" or "every time". "Every year" means "always" and "every time".

But these are small errors. Your written English is so good it makes me smile :) Can you speak this well too?

It is sometimes the case to go a long way to a relative's house just to see that they are not home. So if you do want to visit your relatives, either do so early in the day or make a phone call to let them know about your visit. Usually everyone's visiting schedule is

1. first day - relatives on the father's side ("Tet for father")
2. second day - relatives on the mother's side ("Tet for mother")
3. third day - teachers ("Tet for teachers")
4. fourth day - friends, etc.
5. fifth day on - all kinds of stuff you like, etc.

nb asked what your name means (I don't know what nb means), but "khatores" is a changed form of the word "catorce". Or, it's whatever you want to think, I guess. It's just an easy to remember series of letters that's used to sign on with.

I think "studied" is a better word than "learnt" here. "to study" means to make the effort to know something. "to learn" is to succeed at studying.

"very clear" should be "very clearly" because it modifies the verb "to see".

"reply me" should be "reply to me".

Don't mind the corrections. Welcome to VIEX. I correct you because you asked, but I understood 100%.

"for few years"...don't forget the article "a few years". This is a very common mistake for Viet students.

Let me be the first to correct your English. First of all, it's spelled "English" not "Dnglish":D. OK, OK, I know your finger slipped.

"with one of my friend" should be "with one of my friends" or just "my friend".

Technically, I think "while chatting with one of my friend" is a dangling modifier. It refers to you, but it appears to modify "he", as if he was chatting with one of your friends. You could say "while I was chatting with one of my friends, he...." or "while chatting with me, one of my friends recommended....".

I am so sorry to give so many technical corrections to your first post. Your English was perfectly clear to me, but it's my "job" to comment, right? Please make many more posts and let us know if the corrections are too much.

It's fun to see how a language evolves. I think you're right about the usage of "trong vòng ba ngày" in the past. Well, probably a couple of decades ago. I don't know. Someone may disagree with me on this but "Trong vòng 3 ngày" and "(sau) Ba ngày nữa" have 2 different meanings in modern Vietnamese. "Trong vòng 3 ngày" is now "Within 3 days". Or in other words, it states that the action could happen at anytime during the 3 days in the future but no later than that. And "Sau ba ngày nữa", on the other hand, means "In 3 days" and it suggests the action will take place on the 4th day or the days to come but no sooner.

were given as non-original vietnamese syntaxic constructions.

Yes, the are different in English, pretty much as you have described them.

"In the next 3 days" is the colloquial way of saying "during the next 3 days.

"In 3 days" means on the 3rd day, not the 4th day. But the meaning is indirect enough, that an English speaker would probably clarify as "Clinton will arrive in 3 days, on Thursday."

Although men always outnumber women on VIEX, we do have smart and beautiful women. Just that they're either too young or not available for you to chase after. Hohoho. Anyway, I guess you were saying "Tôi thích đuổi theo đàn bà con gái." If you mean it to be funny, "Tôi thích chơi trò đuổi bắt với đàn bà" would be best but it's a little bit too informal and sexual suggestive. It's a double edged blade if you say it to a woman. She will either laugh out loud if she thinks you're funny and you didn't really mean it, or smile reluctantly if she thinks you're a womanizer trying to be funny. But in case of men, the most common response would be, "hah! As if only you do it!". :p

This is my very first post. I tried to start a new thread, but I got a message that I needed to have a post count of 5, so I thought I'd try making a reply instead.

My wife and I will be visiting Vietnam soon, so we're both wanting to learn the language so we can get around more easily, and order the best food. We've already started studying a bit. She's using the Pimsleur recordings and I'm using the Rosetta Stone software.
I signed up for live lessons on the vietnamesetutors.com website, but I haven't received any email from them. After reading some of the recent posts here, I realized that it might be because Tet is coming up. Is that a good guess?

Well thanks for your advice on pronouns, PH. (In English, at least, this refers to the numeric scale for measuring acidity.)

I smile when Vietnamese reverse their names on websites like VIEX, because then we English speakers can't tell what to think. I do know that your "first" (given) name is Hieu, but since you use the nickname you use, I'll stick with HP and not PH. And I like your avatar.

Another problem we have with Viet names is that we miss most of the clues of gender. Chubby always has to inform me that someone is a guy or girl when I guess wrong from the name. I wasn't "flirting" with Lan Anh (which is the real first name????) because I'm never 100% sure of gender based on a name, but in this case I was pretty sure she was a she because I have know both Chinese and Viet girls name Lan (orchid). I also don't know her age, so bạn is a great suggestion. You notice I used it instead of mình because I wasn't sure if mình worked for "yourself" as well as "myself". So you have taught me 2 important things in one lesson. Thanks.

BTW, regarding "flirting", I am not above doing it! My Viet friends seem to put a worse meaning on "to flirt" than it really has in English. It is a fairly common activity in social interaction between the genders and doesn't necessarily imply an attempted seduction. It can just be friendly. So Lan Anh, I was being intentionally friendly and trying to learn some Vietnamese.

As you said, "chan" is attached after given names when you call a child or a girl who is your close friend. Besides, when you call a boy who is your close friend, "kun" is attached. :) Do you know Little Maruko? It's a famous comic book in Vietnam. I wasn't as "aroused" as Chubby by the whole thing, and it isn't 100% true that "arouse" is only sexual, but you might be better with "excited" or "agitated". I'm not sure what you meant so I can't be sure.

"Arouse" can also refer in general to emotions. "The speech aroused a feeling of patriotism in those who heard it." Only Chubby will think this is a sexual reference:D.

Besides, the word "bạn" you used here is referred to just one person. So, if you want to send your greetings to many people, you use "các bạn" which is the plural noun of "bạn". it should be " Chúc bạn (các bạn) một kỳ nghỉ cuối tuần thật dài và thật vui vẻ !"

But the word "thật" is repeated so you can say like this (it's shorter):

"Chúc các bạn/ mọi người một (kỳ nghỉ) cuối tuần thật dài và vui (vẻ)!"

The word "lâu" has a similar meaning to the word "dài" (when you refer to a length of time) but "lâu" sometimes suggests impatient feeling. (ex: when you have to be waiting your friends, you would say "Lâu quá!" to express annoyed feeling).

Besides, you should add the word "một" in this sentence. In "Chúc các bạn/ mọi người (một) cuối tuần vui vẻ!", you can use either "một" or not (like "Chúc mừng năm mới", you don't say "Chúc mừng một năm mới", right?. But you would say "Chúc một năm mới thịnh vượng" which means "Wish you a prosperous year!"). I think when you want to give more information about a thing, you should put article before it. It's a bit complicated, isn't it?

As you can see, I put the word "kỳ nghỉ" and "vẻ" in parentheses. It means you can use either these or not. In my opinion, the word "vẻ" should be put out (or left out? I'm not sure) since the phrase "dài và vui" is parallel structure.

So, you would say like this:

Chúc các bạn/ mọi người một kỳ nghỉ cuối tuần thật dài và vui vẻ!
or
Chúc các bạn/ mọi người một cuối tuần thật dài và vui vẻ!
or

A week or so ago, I started the pronunciation course and I had no problem accessing the sound files directly from the webpage, as I did(and still do) with the first steps course. But a few days ago, I clicked on the pronunciation course and it appears that the format of the page has changed and now I have to download the sound files into itunes before I can listen to them...is there something I can do to get the old method back:confused:

The problem started after you install iTunes, didn't it? Some media players are very "greedy" :D They want to play every media files you access so those sound files are not exceptions.

I'm trying to learn tiếng việt but I think I should have joined a computing class first, as I'm having more trouble performing operations on the site than learning the lingo, so I hope I'm doing this in the right place. There doesn't seem to be any explanation on the site of what a 'post' is or how to send it, just that you have to do some first before you can do anything else.

Unlike many of you, I'm a bit older, just coming up to 65. Anyway, apart from my native English, the only other language I've learned fluently is Hungarian, then I've been grappling with Greek (tíêng Hy Lap), and for the last couple of years I've been struggling with Vietnamese. It's very interesting to learn such different languages, and all three are also difficult ones, but for me I think Vietnamese is the hardest.

As I think is clear from my picture, I've already spent some time in Vietnam and certainly enjoy myself there mainly because the people are the friendliest I've found anywhere in the world.

I'm a bit confused by my final grades for fs walking.

I messed up the first attempt at the final test because I submitted after 10 minutes thinking there was more to come.

The second attempt I got 94%, so for the third attempt I changed the two answers I thought must be wrong and got 94% again, which doesn't compute!

And I did all the dictations and translations, but I don't seem to have been given any credit for them. Were they not submitted correctly or something, as I still have them on my computer records? Or am I jumping the gun and they are yet to be marked?

I'm not bothered about the grades because I only want to learn the language (I don't need any certificates). I'd just like to know what I've been doing wrong, and maybe other people have similar problems.

Thanks for your concern. The problems are not with the courses which are excellent, but with my apparent inability to understand what I have to do on the computer, and this is only a problem in that it distracts me from getting on with learning the language!

Yes, Chubby Trully usability in web site, especially study sites is very difficult to do but I know you all make a lot of effort to do that :) I am very grateful about that :) This is the best web for learning Vietnamese, that is for sure :) It is really good people to give feedbacks to improve the web :)

Hi everybody,

I'm going to visit Vietnam with my wife next year for at least three weeks - maybe more, depending on visas etc.
I'm a writer/editor/photographer. I don't know a huge amount about Vietnam's history and culture yet, but I've started reading.
I'd also love to be able to speak at least some Vietnamese when I get there. I'm going to start using EV. I already speak a few languages, so starting a completely new one is exciting rather than daunting.
Vietnamese looks difficult to me but hey, Vietnamese babies can learn it ... :D
I hope I can be of help to people who need to improve their English (I can also help out with Korean).

Hey LNP (what is that?). Sorry for the late welcome but I'm glad to have you here. As you can see the forum is not as crowded as it used to be. People got busy, and I myself is enjoying my hectic yet wonderful college life. I just drop by sometimes to weed out spams and sh#t.

one more thing, did you mean HNU or HANU? it's Hanu my university, lots of international students are studying Vietnamese in VN department. Maybe it's a good environment for you. Happy learning :)
