Truyện versus Chuyện

Someone asked me to explain the difference between truyện and chuyện, and I didn't know how to explain it. Although I am a native-Vietnamese speaker, but sometimes I don't know which is the correct one to use.

I have heard of truyện cổ tích as well as chuyện cổ tích, so which is the more correct version?

Is it safe to say that truyện often refers to literature (different genres), for example Truyện Kiều or truyện trinh thám, whereas chuyện refers to common stories?

First off, people never say "kể truyện" or "câu truyện", only "kể chuyện" (tell a story) and "câu chuyện" (tale). I think "truyện" refers to literary works while "chuyện" simply means "things to be reported/retold/etc."

Some more examples:
"Tôi đang đọc một quyển truyện rất tuyệt với."
"Truyện 'Con mèo hoang' của một nhà văn vô danh"

"Bà nội thường kể chuyện cho tôi mỗi khi tôi rảnh rỗi."
"Cậu có chuyện gì không vui phải không?"

And you can use either of them sometimes when it's not clear whether it's a written product or a spoken story. "Chuyện/Truyện cổ tích" is a perfect example because it's ..... Cổ tích :lol: (not joking :P ).
